Are there any personal beliefs or values that are supported and expressed by your dress or body adornment?

I don’t really think so. I just dress how I feel, sometimes I like to dress nice just do it, other times I wear pajamas because I want to be comfortable. I don’t think my beliefs are represented in what I wear, but I do believe my feelings are.

Why do you make the choices you do?

I make the choices I do because I can. I am free to wear whatever I want.

How has this changed over the years?

I think this has changed a lot over the years, when I was younger my mother used to dress me, and as I have gotten older I obviously dress myself. I have gone through many fazes throughout my life, the sports faze, abercrombie, and now I just dress trying to be ahead of the trend. I like fashion a lot and pride myself in what I wear and my style.

What were the core beliefs and values in your family and how were they communicated/sustained through dress or body customization?

My family never really bestowed values upon me, they just happened. We would talk about things as they came up, and more and more as I got older, But now that I’m away from the home it isn’t really talked about much. The only thing my mom cares about are tattoo’s, she says I can’t get one until I’m self sustaining. This hasn’t been a big deal for me because I have never really wanted a tattoo before.

What are the core beliefs and values of your peer community? How are they expressed through dress and body adornment?

I think most of the values of my peers are the same as mine, family, friends loyalty, integrety. These seemed to pop up on just about everybodys blogs. But i don’t think my peers really express these through their dress, they do it more through their actions.

For this art experience assignment, I wanted to find a piece of art that was not in a gallery. I was able to do this at the local liquor store oddly enough. 1800 the new tequila that is out has done a special limited edition bottle with art on it. The artists name for this bottle is Ian McGilivray. The painting is a face with the features of the face being very bold and outlined in black. It is done this way to give a strong statement I feel. The face has different colors coming out of her nose. It gives almost a big brother feel to it though. As if this is the face of something big.

Reflection: After looking at this bottle I went home and did a little research. I found out that 1800 has 1800 different bottles with 1800 different artists designing the bottles all limited to 1800. I found that Ian is from Rhode Island and has been creating art for over a decade. He considers himself an artist by passion and a graphic artist by profession. He has developed his own style of art that he has created from the 50′s 60′s and 70′s as “pop mortem.” After finding this out, it makes sense that I got a kind of big brother feel from this piece of art since he gets his influence form the 50′s and 60′s and 70′s. I think this piece is very strong in that sense.

XBOX 360 is coming out with a very similar system to the Nintendo Wii, it is called Natal, and uses cutting edge technology that will change the video game industry forever. Natal is something that can truly recreate the real world right in your living room. The new Natal doesn’t even use a controller, the controller is you. Using a camera that detects your motion, as well as face and voice recognition. I think this article really shows how close we are coming to recreating real life in a virtual world. her is a link that really shows Natal in work. XBOX 360 Project Natal Motion Sensor Trailer and Demo . The reading talks about simulations, and this Natal is as close to simulating real life in a virtual world we have ever seen. I think we are just getting into using technology and really seeing advancements in these simulation games.

The article I found on the internet had to do with the Nintendo Wii. It talked about he creation of the Wii and how Nintendo wanted to help fight child obesity, so they created the first ever active, motion sensing video game console in history. This article talked about the hype when the Wii first came out, and how they were selling way above their retail value on bidding websites like ebay for over $1,000. I think this article brings up a good point about child obesity in America, and how video games has been a large contributor of the obesity of children in America. Kids these days are playing video games more and more rather than going outside and getting physical exercise. The reading for class called trigger, talked about how you can have people who never go outside and can be really good at sports video games. The ready states, “how close can certain video games recreate something from the real world” and I think the Wii does this to some extent. That when you are playing Wii tennis, you really use the same motion as you would on a tennis court. The Wii gets out off the couch and up moving around the living room playing the game. The Wii really creates the feeling of physical activity and getting the enjoyment out of playing games.

How do you define “spirituality”

Spirituality for me is something that is very difficult to define. I don’t know if there is really one thing that can define spirituality. I think that this has such a different meaning to so many people, and nobody can really truly fully understand a persons definition and understanding of spirituality. But for me, spirituality is having a kind of connection of some higher power, feeling or emotion. That you have a feeling that can only be felt when this spirituality is happening, it can’t be recreated. Something takes your body and mind over, and you just let your mind wonder.

Does spirituality differ from religion?

To be able to answer this question, I think we need to define religion first. For me religion means believing in way of life where you believe in a higher power, and live your life for them. I think spirituality is extremely different from religion. I think a religion is a lifestyle that you live by, and spirituality is something that you know is there, have a belief in, but don’t always think about. For my dad, he is not a religious person, but he is spiritual for sure. I think religion is something that you choose to do, and I think spirituality is something that can just happen.

How do you define “creativity”?

Creativity has no definition. There are no limitations to creativity. I think you have to have no boundaries for creativity, you have to think out of the box to be really creative. You have an endless opportunity when you are try to create something. Once you let your mind be free and just start to wander and create things, understanding that there are no wrong answers. When you are creating you are just trying to let out as much as possible and then go from there.

What is the source of creativity?

Creativity is how you are expressing yourself at a moment in time. Your creativity is an emotion that you are letting free, and expressing it in some way, shape or form. This creativity has no one thing that defines creativity. I do like how the reading talked about how creativity is a journey that we all take. So I believe that creativity is a combination of the journey and the present moment all together that create the source for creativity.

The second article I read talked about how we liked fear because of the rush it gives us. That when we are scared we have fear, and that fear gives us a rush of adrenaline, and that adrenaline has us wanting more and more. A woman who grew up going to haunted houses, and now almost has an addiction to them, she said, “If there’s a haunted house and I can get to it, I’m going.” This addiction is talked about in the readings and how these first times of experiencing this adrenaline or this fear is what has us coming back. That the experience we have the the plot builds on is what we have in our head. This adrenaline rush gives us a fight or flight response that gives us a real life feeling. As well as a sense of relief after the suspense is over.

The first article I read talked about about what type of person enjoys seeing horror films, and who just likes being scared. It says that males who are in their twenty’s are make up most of the population who enjoy horror films. Then the article goes into how horror has themes like “themes of the supernatural, psychological, or biological that are developed against a backdrop of increasing tension.” This is what creates the setting for the horror. It goes on talking about how people who are combat veterans and people who have had psychological problems have connections to horror movies because they can have a fascination with them. These fascinations are called endorphins, and these endorphins are chemicals in our brains that make us happy. the reading talked about how people watch horror because they can relate to the experience it gives them. Like when they go skydiving and they have that thrill.

For the midterm portfolio review I have decided to focus on the people watching activity, food as art, and human values.

People Watching

For the people watching activity we were asked to take time out of our day and notice what the people around us express themselves by the way they dress. We tried to examine their style and try and figure out what kind of person they are.

person #1

Today I decided to people watch in three different places. The first one is in my Marketing class. This is a perfect place to people watch because you get a great variety of people. The person I’m looking at is sitting two seats to my left and is on his blackberry. He is wearing a Las Angeles Angles hat backward. His shirt is from Holister, and Nike Air Force One’s. He has a North Face jacket on, and a nixon watch on his right wrist. It looks to me as if he doesn’t want to be here at all because he has been on his phone playing brick all class. I can tell that he takes pride in looking good and having nice things by the type of clothes he is wearing.

Person #2

So the second place I decided to people watch was tonight when I was at dinner with my grandparents. They were in town tonight because they are driving to Arizona tomorrow and wanted to get a little head start and come down and visit me. At the restaurant that we went to I saw a man who was eating with a bunch of his co-workers. I assumed they worked for ESPN because they were all wearing ESPN Game day clothing and I know they are in town tonight for the game this weekend. This man was a larger man, wearing a game day polo, jeans, he had a shaved head and was wearing glasses. It looks to me as if this man was probably 40 years old, married because he had a wedding ring on, and enjoys his job. The group was having a great time and really seemed to be having a great time. I think this man seems happy with his life and has a great job I would love to do, traveling around the country for the best college games every saturday.

Person #3

The last place I people watched was at the grocery store. I went there after I got back from dinner and had to get a few things. When I was there I was just walking down the aisles and would just watch people as they shopped. As I was checking out at the register I decide to take some time and look around me. I saw a man behind me with a 6 pack of Tecate beer. He was older, wearing an old worn plaid red plaid shirt, old washed jeans that seem to be the pair of jeans he wears every day. I don’t think he values material things very much judging by how he looks. He looks to be about 50 years old, and has a regular run of the mill job doing I don’t know what.

This assignment really made me think that everyday when we wake up we have the choice to choose what we wear and how we express ourselves. It made me realize that people judge me by what I wear, and I have become more aware of what I wear.

Food as art

This assignment had to do with the question being, is food art? And what is slow food and fast food and are they both considered art. We had to find 2 articles that talked about food being art and discuss them.

Love, E. (2009) Food and art: Eat the meal of the film. The Independent, retrieved on October 25, 2009 from http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/features/food-and-art-eat-the-meal-of-the-film-1798156.html

In the article “Eat the meal of the film,” emma says you should eat the food that is the same as the movie. Meaning that if it was the movie chocolate, you should be eating chocolate, or if you are watching rookie of the year a baseball film you should be eating a hotdog and popcorn. I really like this idea and I’m going to try it the next time I watch a movie at home.

In the article it talks about enjoying the food, “If an audience can relate to and understand the medium that an artist is working in, they are far more likely to enjoy and appreciate the art.” This relates to what was talked about in the article by Korsmeyer, in that, “the sensation of tasting alone is going to reach a limit very quickly.” I think this is an interesting point because I know that when I find a food that I love, for instance steak. When I have a great steak I love every bite of it and I never reach a limit, if anything it gets better and better with every bite.

So I think that if we can understand where the cook is coming from then we can have a better understanding of the food. And I think we can always appreciate food as it nourishes our body and keeps us alive. I don’t think there is a limit to that. I think there is no limit to food, we have endless possibilities in what we can create with tastes and smells.

Gopnik, B. (2009, September 23). The Big Debate: Can food be a serious art?. The Washington Post, retrieved on October 25th, 2009 from http://www.washingtonpost.com/wpdyn/content/article/2009/09/22/AR2009092203137.html

This article is basically a series of questions asking if food is art or not. They have a yes and no answer for every question asked and really bring up some good points that I had not thought of before about food and if it is art or not.

In Telfers article she talks about food being a creation. Just like a piece of art is, a creation. The article talks about how food is not art because there is nothing left over once you are done with it. But the same can be said for a performance, nothing is left after the performance is over, but the performance is still art. The creation or performance is over, just like the food is gone, but they are both art.

She also talks about how no two people can appreciate the same piece of art the same way. The same as no two people have the same taste buds, that we all taste things a little bit different in our own unique ways. The article talks about how food can’t go beyond its immediate sensory pleasures, but really it can because there is a history behind all food. This relates because food is not just food, we all see it in our own light.

This is one of my favorite assignments we have done all year. I absolutely love cooking and really think that food is art. I always try and come up with new creative dishes that involve spices and prep time. So I can understand the process that goes into a good meal, and really now think of it as a piece of art. I have found myself now looking at food all the time and thinking what can I make with this and that.

Live Values

for this assignment we were asked to list our values that were most important to least important. This assignment had us try and understand where we get our values and lifestyle from and understand how our family has influenced us.

Top 5 values

1. Health

2. Family

3. Friendship

4. Creativity

5. Enjoyment

So today is a very rare day because I’m in Las Vegas (location) for my friends 21st birthday (friendship)(enjoyment). Today we went to the pool to relax and get ready for the night. Then we placed some bets on football (wealth). And after that we went out to dinner. At night we went to the club at the Bellagio Hotel. At the club we danced (health) and had a great time.

I would definitely say I didn’t hit all my top 5 values, but I did hit a good amount. Like I said earlier this was a very rare day for me. I Think out of my top 5 values I inherited Health and Friendship. My great grandpa always told me the most important thing is being healthy. If you don’t have your health then you don’t have much. Friendship is a value that my mother especially bestowed upon me. She is still extremely close to her high school friends as am I. That friends are with you forever and to not forget them.

I think that my 20 values in life will fluctuate as time goes on because I know that (wealth) will become a very important thing once I have a family. As well as (Security) knowing that everything will be okay and not having to worry. As well as (Prestige) I want to be thought of as a person who has innovated the marketing field. And that will be a big part of my life in the near future.

For me this was a time to really stop and reflect on my life. School has us going a million miles an hour and this activity really just let me sit down and think about life. Values are something that I hold very dear to my heart, but is not something I’m thinking about all the time. I know that my values will change overtime and that is something I look forward to in the future!
